| ...try denting it |

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed people
can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

We make a difference...
and, most important, we have fun doing it. |

| Our Statement |
| In May of 1999 a group of library high school teen volunteers (us!),
established a group we call "...try denting it". The name, (after hours of
discussion), came from our slogan: "Maybe we can't change the world...try
denting it." Amid all the acts of violence taking place in our schools,
we felt that as teenagers we were totally being viewed as BAD just
because of our age. How could we change the way people viewed us? A
lot of us felt that violence in schools was made worse by ever-present-never-to-be-rid-of
bullies. We certainly couldn't make them disappear. But maybe
if kids had better self esteem to start with...would that help? We
were so frustrated wondering how we, as individuals, could make any
kind of differenc in the world. We finally decided our goal would be
to try and strengthen self-esteem and promote tolerance for all. Learning
first to respect yourself teaches you to respect others. Before we
convinced the entire world to just be nice, (and of course that would
only be a matter of time), we'd start in our own community. And what
better place to start than where we already were - our library! We
came up with a plan and yes, we know perfectly well it's not going
to change the world...but it might just make a dent. |
