The Florida Main Street Program is a part of the National Main Street
Center of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Since 1980, the
National Main Street Center has been working with communities across the
nation to revitalize their historic or traditional commercial areas. The
Main Street program is designed to improve all aspects of the downtown.
The Main Street approach has rekindled entrepreneurship, downtown cooperation
and civic concern. It has earned national recognition as a practical means
of utilizing and improving a community's local resources and conditions.
Because it is a locally driven program, all of what is done stems from
local issues and concerns.
The City of Clearwater was designated a Florida Main Street Community
in August of 1998. The program utilizes the Main Street four-point approach
using the Joint Venture as its organizational branch. The Joint Venture
is made up of a City Council appointed member, the Executive Director
of the Community Redevelopment Agency, the Downtown Development Board
(DDB) Chairperson, co-chairpersons from the Design, Economic Development
and Promotion committees and the Main Street Program Coordinator.
The Clearwater Main Street Program is volunteer-driven and made up of
business owners, property owners, civic leaders, downtown residents, residents
from surrounding neighborhood associations, church representatives and
individuals with a common interest in the revitalization of downtown Clearwater.
Three committees meet monthly to address issues and concerns that confront
Clearwater’s downtown and to accomplish tasks agreed to by the Joint
Venture.
This year, our program’s main goals are to begin to promote Clearwater
as an exciting place to be once improvements are completed and assist
existing downtown businesses through the transition.
Main Street Committee Descriptions:
- The Promotion Committee promotes downtown businesses, coordinates
merchant events including the annual Downtown Clearwater Art Stroll,
is designing the Construction Tool Kit, a resource to assist businesses
through the Cleveland Street Streetscape construction and assists the
Farmer’s Market with their events.
- The Design Committee recommends yearly Downtown Development Board
Design Award recipients and looks for ways to improve downtown’s
visual appeal through murals, art projects, and will be marketing revisions
to the Façade Improvement Grant Program.
- The Economic Development Committee is inventorying parking lots in
and around the downtown, and the development of a Merchant Storefront
Maintenance Program.
If you would like to participate in any of the above committees please
call Anne Fogarty, Main Street Program Coordinator at 562-4044.
