Clean Marina Program

The Clearwater Municipal Marina, which is located at 25 Causeway Blvd., has been designated a "Clean Marina" by the Clean Boating Partnership. This organization is a liaison between the State of Florida and the marine industry. With thousands of marine facilities and close to one million registered boats and vessels in Florida, environmental education within the boating community becomes crucial to safeguarding the state's natural resources.

Image of earth covered in grassThe Clean Boating Partnership has developed four specific segments within their Clean Marina Program, to encourage environmentally friendly practices - beyond regulatory requirements - in and around Florida's waterways:

  • Hurricane Preparedness. Boats and vessels should be removed from the water and secured in a designated, safe location prior to the approach of a tropical storm.
  • Petroleum Spill Recovery Plan. A spill kit should be placed on each dock in a convenient, easily accessible location.
  • Fueling. Marina personnel should supervise customers who are fueling, and vent guards should be provided to prevent spills.
  • Liquid Waste. Waste storage containers and tanks should be properly housed in locations with a roof structure overhead to prevent rainwater or other elements from penetrating the containers.

Because the Clearwater Municipal Marina meets all of these specifications, the marina is greener and cleaner for Clearwater. Read more information on the State of Florida's Clean Marina Program on their Web site.

For the 26th time in a row, Clearwater has been named a Tree City USA. That's right... the city isn't just known for its white sandy beaches, but also for our canopy of gorgeous green trees. The Public Services Urban Forestry division keeps the trees in Clearwater healthy and looking good.

The division's arborists oversee the city's tree canopy, maintaining more than 28,000 trees. They cut limbs that block street signs and other hazards like sidewalks and roadways. They also remove damaged and diseased trees from city property and rights-of-way.

When it comes to trimming or removing trees, the division recommends that residents use a certified arborist to ensure that trees are cut so they don't become damaged or diseased. To learn more, call (727) 562-4950 x7208 or visit the Urban Forestry division's Web page .

TravelSmart Magazine named the Clearwater Public Library as one of America's Landmark Green Libraries in their April 15, 2007 issue. According to the magazine, "This 90,000-square-foot library, which opened in 2004, was designed to help anchor the redevelopment of downtown Clearwater. Located on a bluff, its windows, garden and outdoor spaces look out on Clearwater Harbor and Coachman Park. Controlled day lighting reduces dependence on artificial lighting, and rainwater is captured and re-used for irrigation."

Air Quality

The quality of the air we breathe is important to everyone's health. The Pinellas County Air Quality Division is dedicated to protect and preserve the air quality within Pinellas County. The division provides and maintains the standards and programs to ensure proper management and control of air pollution to enhance public health and welfare. To learn more, visit their Web page.
