Hurricane Preparedness Expo, June 15

The city of Clearwater will team up with Pinellas County and other organizations for a Hurricane Preparedness Expo in June. The event will be from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 15 at Joe DiMaggio Sports Complex, 2450 Drew St.

The focus is to educate Clearwater residents about what they can do to prepare for the upcoming hurricane season, which begins June 1 and runs through Nov. 30.

"Now is the time to make sure you are fully prepared for hurricane season, when the weather is not threatening," said Jevon Graham, the division chief of emergency management for Clearwater Fire & Rescue. "At this event, we will equip you with tools to be better prepared."

Multiple resources from the city of Clearwater, Pinellas County and other organizations will be on hand. Officials will help residents look up their evacuation zone and flood zone and sign up for Alert Pinellas. There will also be free hurricane kits, free lunch from the Salvation Army and free pre-filled sandbags, with a limit of 10 per vehicle. Sandbags do not prevent flooding in the case of a storm surge, but can help minimize water intrusion.

Other participants include the Civil Air Patrol, Red Cross, Humane Society of Pinellas and Suncoast Animal League.

"We are expecting this to be an extremely busy hurricane season," Graham said. "The city wants to partner with our residents to make sure we're all fully prepared."
